Strugge in Paradise
Struggle in Paradise is a documentary chronicling Dr. Perlman’s journey and introducing us to many of his portrait subjects. It won the award for “Best Movie” from the National Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis.THE EXHIBITION: Oil on canvas portraits of our homeless neighbors accompanied by moving biographies. “The portraits and biographies are filled with human tragedy. If you hear their stories and look into their eyes, you will never see a homeless person the same way again.”
Stuart Perlman, Ph.D. has been a psychologist and psychoanalyst in West Los
Angeles for over 30 years. In 2010 he began painting portraits of individuals experiencing homelessness. He spent hours hearing their stories and getting to know them deeply. He now has 200 portraits of individuals who have lived on Venice Beach and Skid Row.
Dr. Perlman’s work has been chronicled in numerous news outlets and publications, including the Guardian (London), Taipei Times (Taiwan), Vanity Fair Italia, Los Angeles Times (June 10, 2012, Column One) and the Jewish Journal (Cover Story). Author of The Therapist’s Emotional Survival: Dealing with the Pain of Exploring Trauma and numerous articles in psychoanalytic and psychological journals, Dr. Perlman speaks nationally about his experience with the Faces Of Homelessness project. Dr. Perlman is the 2016 Los Angeles County Psychological Association Social Justice Award winner and honored by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.
