Light Up a Library

Our trained volunteers help operate libraries at underfunded public elementary schools, enabling more than 3,000 children to discover the joys of reading. Volunteers provide weekly story time, help students find books for school projects and promote growth achieved through reading. NCJW|LA also replaces lost and worn books at these school libraries.

Afterschool Homework Clubs

Homework clubs provide children at elementary schools with a safe environment in which to do their homework with assistance from volunteers. In some cases our volunteers are the only adults available to work with these children on their homework.

Shelter-Based Enrichment and Tutoring

Our tutors assist children and teens living in Los Angeles shelters and the surrounding neighborhoods with homework and creative activities. Our volunteers create an environment where youth feel welcomed, safe and secure, enabling them to develop the academic skills necessary to achieve success in school.

Art Pals

Art Pals offers a 13-week program in contemporary arts to more than 500 third graders in elementary schools where visual arts education has been reduced or eliminated. The curriculum was designed by the world-renowned Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art and is delivered by volunteer art educators. It incorporates art history discussions, hands-on activities and field trips to galleries and museums.

Art Bridges Culture

Volunteer art educators help public school third-graders explore the diverse cultures of Los Angeles through art, music, cultural artifacts, slides, discussion and hands-on art activities.

ABC students often use the concepts and vocabulary they have learned in the program to share their family traditions and stories on the playground.

Pregnant and Parenting Teens Tutoring and Enrichment

Volunteers help pregnant and parenting teens earn a high school diploma through one-on-one tutoring. Tutors also teach life skills such as resume writing and interviewing techniques.

Back 2 School Store

The Back 2 School Store provides children in need with new clothing, shoes, and school supplies so that they will be prepared to start the new school year. Volunteers collect clothing donations and set up a one-day pop-up store where volunteers help children shop for free clothing, school supplies, and personal items. The Back 2 School Store will be held August 7, 2016. Read more…
